The Peacock Dream: What My Yard Visitors Taught Me About Business

When we first moved to Lonsdale, nearly everyone asked us the same question:
“Have you heard the peacocks yet?”
Across the road from our home was a small farm with all sorts of animals, and — of course — peacocks.
Ever since childhood, I had dreamed of seeing a peacock’s tail spread wide, sparkling with dazzling, jewel-toned feathers and those mesmerizing eye-like patterns. Until then, I’d only admired them in books, never up close.

Last winter, that dream came closer than I ever imagined. A small peacock family — a proud male, his graceful mates, and their chick — began visiting our yard. Because my kids are homeschooled, they were the first to spot them. Their excitement was pure joy:
“Mom! The peacocks are here!”
Their enthusiasm was contagious. I would drop everything, grab my camera, and hurry to the porch to catch a glimpse, wanting to preserve the moment.
For a while, these peacock visits became part of our family routine — until one day they simply stopped coming close. We could still see them across the road, but they no longer wandered into our yard. I missed those moments of wonder.

One morning while I was watering flowers, the peacocks boldly stepped through our open gate. They nibbled curiously at the flower bulbs, exploring like mischievous guests. I stood completely still, hardly daring to breathe. Then, in a sudden burst of motion, the female flew over the gate, and the male leapt after her. For a moment, time seemed to pause.
Later that day, my son came bursting through the door, eyes shining:
“Mom, there’s a peacock in the yard!”
Five minutes later, he ran back, flashing two fingers with a grin stretching across his face:
“Mom, there are TWO peacocks now!”
His excitement was irresistible. I dropped my work and joined him outside. All of us piled onto the trampoline — our front-row seats — and watched quietly as the peacocks paraded past us like royalty putting on a private show.
Lessons for Business Owners
Reflecting on these moments, I saw a powerful lesson for business owners. We often carry our dreams quietly, believing we must achieve everything alone. But just as my children celebrated and noticed my dream, we need people around us who know what we’re aiming for — people who recognize opportunities, cheer us on, and help us spot our “peacocks” when they finally arrive.
Running a business can feel isolating at times. Having a trusted circle — family, mentors, friends, or even a bookkeeper — who understand your vision can keep you grounded, focused, and encouraged. They help you celebrate milestones, push through challenges, and stay connected to your mission.
Surround yourself with people who believe in your dream and remind you why you started. They can help you see possibilities you might otherwise miss, making the journey richer and far more meaningful.
Final Thoughts
Sometimes, we all need someone to help us spot our own peacock when it finally arrives.
