Thankful Reflection: The Job That Redirected My Life

Today, I’m thankful for my very first accounting job — the one God opened for me when every other door seemed closed.
Right after college, it was nearly impossible to find a real accounting job without “experience.” So I took whatever temporary positions I could — low pay, short-term contracts — just trying to get into the field.

Then God stepped in.
A hiring agency offered me a 3-month temp job at Northwestern Airlines.
Just three months.
But those three months changed everything.
Northwestern saw my work and decided to hire me directly, right during their merger with Delta Airlines. Suddenly I was working for a major airline — and the blessings were incredible.
We flew everywhere, and somehow, in those few months, we experienced so many places… all for free. That season was a gift I still treasure.
Then came another turn — I was laid off when Delta moved all accounting to Atlanta.
But here is the part I’m especially thankful for today:
Being laid off was God’s perfect timing.
I had just gotten pregnant with our first child, and I was only three months away from my due date when the layoff happened. I didn’t understand it then… but now I do.
God did not let us fall.
For the next year, I received unemployment benefits that carried us through one of the most important seasons of my life — becoming a mother.
What felt like a loss was actually protection.
What looked like an ending was preparation.
Every job, every closed door, and every unexpected turn led me to where I am today — to my calling, my clients, my bookkeeping business, and the purpose God wrote for me long before I saw it.
God’s mercy opens doors.
His grace sustains us.
His timing protects us.
And His redirection guides our purpose.
This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for beginnings that didn’t look like beginnings at the time…
and for endings that were really God making room for a new blessing.
