🏐 From the Volleyball Court to the Balance Sheet

A Joyful First Game

It was the day my daughter had been waiting for — her first volleyball game. She had practiced for weeks, and now she would finally step onto the court with her team. We arrived forty minutes early so she could warm up with the other girls.

As the clock ticked closer to game time, I scanned the crowd looking for my husband. A kind lady simply said, ‘He’s helping as a jury tonight.’ I smiled in surprise — I hadn’t expected that.

The referee’s whistle blew, and the game began. The gym filled with cheers, squeaking shoes, and the echo of the ball striking the floor. I’ll admit, I didn’t know volleyball rules at all. More than once, I clapped for the wrong team. But I was cheering for effort, courage, and for every girl who gave her best. Thankfully, the scoreboard kept me on track.

And just like that, they won! The joy on the girls’ faces, the echo of cheering, and the crowd’s energy turned the gym into a place of celebration.

The Second Volleyball Game – More Confidence, More Clarity

Just a few days later, she was back on the court for game two. This time, I felt a little more prepared. I understood some of the rules, could follow the rotations, and knew when to clap at the right moments. The more familiar I became, the more exciting the game was to watch.

And yes — her team won again! Double the joy, double the celebration.

That second game reminded me of what happens when a business owner finally gets their bookkeeping system organized. At first, the rules of accounting feel confusing.

But with each month of clear reports, you begin to understand the flow — and it becomes easier to cheer for your own progress.

Why Small Business Bookkeeping Matters

Watching those two games reminded me that a business without financial reports is like a volleyball team without a scoreboard.

  • The Profit & Loss report tells you if you’re scoring points — earning more than you spend.

  • The Balance Sheet shows your team’s strength — assets and liabilities.

  • Recordkeeping for small businesses ensures every receipt, invoice, and transaction is counted.

Just like a jury and scoreboard keep the volleyball game fair and accurate, a bookkeeper keeps your numbers straight, ensuring you know the real score in your business.

Bookkeeping Tips for Entrepreneurs

Here are a few lessons the court reminded me of — practical tips for keeping your books in order:

Bookkeeping Tips for Entrepreneurs
Bookkeeping Tips for Entrepreneurs

1. Keep Score Clearly

In volleyball, the scoreboard matters. In business, financial statements for small businesses show whether your company is winning.

2. Follow the Rules

Points don’t count if you step over the line. Likewise, deductions don’t count if you can’t prove them. Always organize receipts for taxes.

3. Rely on the Team

A winning team needs more than one player. In business, your bookkeeper is a key teammate. Working with a QuickBooks ProAdvisor near me gives you expert guidance, saves time, and prevents costly mistakes.

4. Practice Brings Confidence

By the second game, I understood more rules. In business, reviewing your QuickBooks Online reports monthly builds confidence and clarity for growth.

Encouragement for the Journey

Just like my daughter’s team, your business will have both wins and losses. Some months may feel like a victory, and others may feel heavy — expenses rising, income slowing, goals not yet met. But even in those moments, there is hope when your books are clear.

Bookkeeping is more than numbers. It’s the story of your hard work, your decisions, and your dreams. The first time you look at reports, it may feel overwhelming — just like me at that first volleyball game, unsure when to clap or what the rules meant. But over time, with someone by your side keeping track, it all begins to make sense.

And here’s the part I want you to hold onto: you are not alone in this. Every business owner deserves someone who will celebrate the wins, explain the losses, and remind you that both are part of growth. My joy as your bookkeeper is to walk with you through the process, turning confusion into clarity, and anxiety into peace of mind.

Like the second game, where I understood more and could cheer more confidently, you too will find your confidence growing each step of the way. And when the victories come — big or small — you’ll know exactly how far you’ve come, and you’ll have someone cheering with you.
