🌾 Faithful with the Few: How God Guided Me Through a Bookkeeping Mistake

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” – Luke 16:10

It was tax season — my first real one as a bookkeeper.

I walked into the meeting with the company’s manager to meet with the tax preparer, feeling confident — almost proud. I had spent weeks preparing the books, checking reports, and reviewing every number. The books finally balanced — I had carefully traced each account, recalculating what the balances should be. I added up the revenue, subtracted every expense, and adjusted each account until everything matched perfectly, just the way I had been taught back in college using T-accounts.

This was the moment I wanted to prove to my self that I was capable — that I truly belonged in this field I loved.

But within minutes, that confidence collapsed.

The tax preparer — a calm, kind Christian man — began scrolling through my reports. His gentle tone couldn’t hide what he saw. Something was wrong. Technically, the books balanced — but they balanced the wrong way. I had posted some expenses inside the revenue account instead of leaving them in their proper expense categories. On paper, QuickBooks showed everything matched, but in reality, the income and expenses were mixed together. It was a humbling reminder that balance doesn’t always mean accuracy.”

In that moment, I felt my heart drop to the floor.

My face turned hot — so hot I could almost feel the color rising up my neck. If you know me, you know how fast I blush, and that day, I felt like I was burning from the inside out.

I had completely mixed up the company’s books, and in that moment, I knew God was about to teach me something I’d never forget.

Grace in the Moment of Failure

I braced myself for harsh words. For disappointment. For someone to tell me I wasn’t good enough for bookkeeping.

But instead, the tax preparer looked at me with understanding.

He didn’t react in anger or frustration. With calm eyes and a steady voice, he began to show me where I had gone wrong — gently walking me through the errors, explaining how the revenue and expenses had become mixed. His tone was patient, not condemning.

Then he paused, looked at me kindly, and asked,

“So, how are you going to fix it?”

I swallowed hard and said, “I’ll fix it. I just need two weeks.”

I didn’t even know how I would fix it. But deep inside, I knew God would guide me.

The company’s manager — who also happened to be a believer — stayed quiet, watching kindly.

As I left the building, trying to look confident, the manager walked me to the door. He asked softly,

“Are you sure you can handle it?”

I smiled through the ache in my chest.

“Yes,” I said. “I’ll handle it.”

But the moment I got into my car and drove a few blocks away, the brave front fell apart. I pulled over, parked somewhere quiet, and cried until my chest hurt.

“God,” I prayed through tears, “I don’t know what to do. I don’t even know where to start. But You know. Please, please guide me.”

Two Weeks of Tears, Work, and Miracles

Those two weeks became sacred.

By day, I was a mom of two toddlers under three years old — changing diapers, preparing snacks, calming cries.

By evening, I was a bookkeeper on her knees before God, asking Him to lead me step by step through every transaction I had tangled.

My husband became my quiet hero — coming home from work, taking the kids so I could dive into the books. He’d whisper, “You’ll figure it out. God’s got you.”

And indeed, He did.

Every time I opened QuickBooks Desktop, something inside me shifted. The same program that had once overwhelmed me started to open up.

It was as if God Himself was teaching me where to click, where to look, and how to trace the errors.

Some nights, I’d pray over the screen,

“Lord, give me eyes to see what I’m missing.”

And somehow, I would see it — a mis posted expense, an account out of place, everything that had caused all the confusion.

Each small correction felt like a miracle.

The more I worked, the more I realized it wasn’t about the books — it was about trust.

God wasn’t just helping me fix a mistake; He was teaching me how to walk with Him through the pressure, through the noise, through the shame of not being perfect.

When God Is Your Teacher

At the end of those two weeks, I walked back into that same office — exhausted, trembling, but peaceful.

The tax preparer reviewed my updated reports. His eyes softened.

“Good job,” he said with a quiet smile. “Now it looks right.”

I couldn’t hold back the tears of relief. “Thank you,” I said softly. “God helped me.”

Inside, I was singing "Hallelujah!!!"

That day, I didn’t just fix the books — God fixed something inside of me.

He showed me that mistakes aren’t the end of a story; they’re the start of humility, growth, and wisdom.

In those nights of trial, I fell in love with bookkeeping cleanup. I discovered that behind every messy ledger is a chance to restore order, peace, and clarity — the same way God restores the brokenness in us.

From Mistakes to Mastery

Now, seven years later, I often look back and smile.

I started with one small company — the place where I first learned, stumbled, and grew.

Through that early failure, God built the foundation for my future.

Five years later, I opened my own bookkeeping firm — and every lesson I teach today was born from that very moment of grace and correction.

Today, I help multiple businesses organize, reconcile, and rebuild their financials. And every time I face a new challenge — when something doesn’t add up, when the reports look off — I remember those two weeks.

Because that’s when I learned that God doesn’t abandon you when you mess up.

He guides your hands, steadies your mind, and reminds me:

“I can do all things through Him Who strengthens me.”

(Philippians 4:13)

That verse became my anthem — my lifeline.

It still whispers to me in every busy season, every new challenge, every late night spent helping a client find balance again.

From the Bible to the Books: Stewardship in Business

For business owners walking this journey — especially those managing their own finances — stewardship always begins in the small details.

It’s the quiet moments no one sees — when you stay faithful to the records, when you double-check your numbers, when you choose honesty over convenience.

It’s:

  • Staying diligent in your recordkeeping, even when no one is watching.

  • Choosing integrity instead of shortcuts when classifying expenses or reporting income.

  • Learning from mistakes rather than covering them up.

  • Asking God daily for wisdom — not only for profit and growth, but for honesty, balance, and peace in your finances.

Whether you’re managing one account or one hundred, remember this: God’s blessings multiply through faithfulness.

Every reconciled account, every corrected entry, every transparent report — these are more than bookkeeping tasks.

They are acts of worship, written in the language of numbers.

The Steward’s Lesson

To me, bookkeeping has never been just about numbers — it’s about stewardship.

It’s about being faithful with what God has placed in our care: the receipts, the reports, the clients, the trust, the relationships.

And as we stay faithful in those “small things,” He multiplies the work of our hands.

So if you’re reading this and feel like you’ve failed — whether in business, balance sheets, or simply in life — take heart:

God is the best Teacher you could ever have.

He’s patient, gentle, and full of grace.

He doesn’t scold when you fall short; He guides you back — until your books, and your heart, are balanced again.

Reflection for October

This autumn season reminds us of the harvest — the time when what was once hidden beneath the soil begins to show fruit.

Maybe your “seed” this month is a quiet act of obedience:

🌿 reconciling your books,

🌿 choosing integrity where it’s easier to ignore,

🌿 or fixing something that’s been left undone.

Harvest doesn’t come to those who rush.

It comes to those who are faithful in the few.

And often, the first fruit grows right in the place where you once thought you failed.

As I sit here now, reflecting on those early tremors of fear and confusion, I see God’s hand in every step. That first bookkeeping mistake was not just a stumble — it was a doorway into greater faith, humility, and precision. It taught me that numbers whisper truths, but it’s the heart behind them that matters most.

If you feel overwhelmed by messy books, tangled accounts, or the burden of doing it all alone — you don’t have to face it in silence. I’d be honored to walk beside you.

✏️ Here’s how I can help you restore clarity and peace in your finances:

  • I’ll review your books, find inconsistencies, and correct them with transparency.

  • I’ll set up processes to keep your recordkeeping organized and trustworthy.

  • I’ll come alongside you as a partner — not just a service provider — so you never feel alone in the numbers.

You don’t have to wonder whether you’re doing it “right.” Together, we’ll bring your books into balance — and your heart into rest.
