The Gift of Waiting: How I Turned 2 Hours Into a Strategy Session with My Feet

The other day, I found myself with a rare pocket of time — two full hours — while my daughter was at a youth group gathering at Clear Lake Park. It wasn’t enough time to head home, and too much time to just sit around.

So I started thinking: What can I do with this time — something enjoyable, something useful? Maybe I could crochet a few rows, swing by the store, catch up on a little client work, write another blog post, or even squeeze in some research I’ve been meaning to do.

I decided to go for a walk. I mentally prepared myself for a walk, and not just any walk — a familiar one, full of memories and quiet meaning. We used to live nearby, and I had walked those trails often years ago. I knew how long it took to walk one circle — just enough to make it count without pushing it. I dropped off my daughter and began what I called “my mission.”

Walking
Walking

There was no rush. I allowed myself to walk slow, breathe deep, take pictures, and simply be present. My mind began to wander in the best way — reflecting, sorting ideas, planning. And then my phone rang.

It was my husband, who had taken our other kids to the lake. As we talked, I looked up and realized: I was already more than halfway around the trail — and only 35 minutes had passed. I was genuinely surprised that even with my slow, relaxed pace, I had come that far.

So I kept going. My goal became walking for the full first hour, then turning around to head back. I didn’t want to come back too early, but I also didn’t want to waste time waiting in the car. I kept my pace steady, my thoughts active. I used that walk as both a refresh and a strategy session.

By the time I got back, I still had 15 extra minutes to rest before picking up my daughter. I sat down, sipping my water, breathing in the calm — and I don’t even know how to explain it, but that walk had turned into something more than just a way to pass time.

It was like the blog post began writing itself — not because I was searching for content, but because I was simply living it.

And isn’t that how business works too? Some of the best strategies and ideas don’t always come during planning meetings or when we’re staring at the screen. Sometimes they show up when we create space — when we step away, pause, and allow our minds to breathe.

The Strategy of Waiting: A Message to Fellow Business Owners

As entrepreneurs, we often face “in-between” moments — those hours, days, or even seasons where we’re waiting between clients, projects, or launches. It can be uncomfortable. Sometimes it feels unproductive. But it doesn’t have to be.

That walk taught me something powerful: waiting can be active.

Here’s how we, as business owners, can make the most of those in-between spaces:

1. Reassess and Reflect

Use that downtime to reflect on what’s working and what’s not in your business. Is your pricing sustainable? Are your systems efficient? Is your time going where it should?

2. Tidy Up the Back End

Just like walking clears the mind, bookkeeping cleanups clear the books. Waiting for your next big project? It’s the perfect time to catch up on reconciliations, organize receipts, or review your year-to-date numbers.

3. Nurture Your Audience

Think about your current clients or potential leads. Can you send out a helpful email? Share a behind-the-scenes post? Use the “quiet” time to strengthen the relationships that keep your business alive.

4. Walk the Trail

Literally or figuratively. Movement brings clarity. Whether it’s a walk around the park, organizing your office, or mapping out your next quarter with sticky notes — use the time to reset and realign.

We all wait. It’s part of the rhythm of life and business. But the question is: what do you do in the waiting?

For me, that simple walk turned into something meaningful — not because I was pushing hard or hustling… but because I chose to be intentional.

So friend, if you find yourself with time between your next client, next idea, or next opportunity — don’t waste it. Step into it. Use it.

Breathe in the space. Listen to your thoughts. Clean up your books. Go for the walk.

Waiting isn’t wasted when it’s used well.
